"The customer is always right!" Do you think this is true? If you have ever worked in customer service you understand that whether you agree or not, you must satisfy the customers needs. I believe, though, that customer service goes deeper than general satisfaction. I believe that customer service applies to the ENTIRE experience.
I recently doned a popular store to purchase some milk and eggs. I had three employees ask if I was finding everything okay. Thank you, customer service gurus, for asking! It was good to know that there were people available if I needed them. Yes, this sounds like a great customer experience, but alas, it ends on a sour note. As I go to check out my items, the no-eye-contact cashier mumbled "Did you find everything you needed?" My response was "yes" and "how are you today". With a quick response she then began to chat with the cashier behind me. Their conversation, no joke, was about buying porn and cigarettes when they turn 18. "How cool will it be to totally be able to buy porn? My boyfriend will be super excited!" SERIOUSLY?!?!? Well gee, cashier girl, I am so happy for your new found freedom in the land of porn and cigarettes. Instead of providing me with customer service, feel free to continue this junky conversation.
This type of experience, unfortunately, has become the norm for customer service. This generation seems to believe that they can show up, give minimum effort, give crappy customer service, and still expect a full paycheck. Employees expect to be paid 100% of their earnings, but yet they give less than a 100% effort. Can you imagine if a company said that they will only pay you 100% if you genuinely give 100%? What an amazing experience that would be for the employees and the customers!
I can say with great emphasis that I am SICK of poor customer service. I completely agree that customer service is not easy, but one should always put forth effort to focus on every single customer. When one of these people are found, make sure their manager knows what amazing customer service they have provided. A good word may go a long way.
